The Breakfast Club: Behind The Music

The Breakfast Club

When it comes to re-visiting the decade of MTV, no other musical act in America does it better than The Breakfast Club.  For over a decade, music fans in the Tri-Cities have validated the band's claim of retro supremacy by flocking to four shows per year.  After a sold out show in February, The Breakfast Club will be returning to Capone's in Johnson City on Saturday, May 25th.  The show is 18 and up and admission is $10.  Early arrival is recommended.

We at TriCitiesNights have enjoyed covering this totally tubular band since 2007 and wanted to give you dudes a wicked fresh spin on the guys who make up the group.  So veg out and chill while each band member gives you an inside look at the life behind the man.

Jerry

Jerry :

My first instrument was clarinet, which got me beat up a lot.  So to boost my self confidence, I started playing drums when I was 16, naked and in front of a mirror.  Since then, confidence has never been a concern of mine.  I've been quoted as saying, "there's a big difference between being aloof and being an asshole, thankfully I'm both."  I invented powdered water (just add water); it's the only known 100% guaranteed cure for hick-ups and the 17 hour work week.  I love apple sauce, orange juice, and cherry soda, but hate apples, oranges, and cherries.

DavayRay

DavayRay :

Hi, I'm DavayRay, and when I grow up I want to be a rockstar! - ever since I was five and broke my first plastic guitar over my loyal smiling collie.  He seemed totally okay with it, perhaps understanding that this is a necessary part of my musical journey to someday excel and score free beer and stuff, while basking in a hailstorm of bras, panties, and rubber chickens!  My first talent show I was so scared that I forgot my name, but somehow remembered the chords and words.  It was the first giant leap into what would become my profession, obsession, and transgression all rolled into one steaming pile of joy where I can wear women's clothing in public, drink on the job, and actually get paid to play my guitar and sing, while partying with the awesomest fans on the planet in the only real and true 80's music tribute - The Breakfast Club …JC babay yeah!!

Matt B.

Matt B :

From the earliest of my recollections I have had one overriding goal that has driven my life's choices.  I'm not sure if this was inspired by watching The Who, listening to Elton John, or being there as my mom played the piano.  This goal has led me down many roads to many strange lands inhabited by many strange people.  There was Winnemucca, Nevada with its "ranches."  In Minot, North Dakota, fans left their vehicles running in the parking lot the whole show because of the extreme cold - then there's Op, Alabama, Jackpot Junction, Wisconsin, and Narragansett, Rhode Island - Big cities and small towns, sold out shows or only staff.  This goal I speak of is to rule the world.  Not figuratively, but literally ruling the world.  While I work towards that goal, playing in The Breakfast Club will be a sufficient substitute.  Johnson City could play a large role in the accomplishment of my goal to rule the world.  I would tell you how, but the scheme is so complicated it would take up several pages.  See you all on the 25th!

Matt H.

Matt H :

Hello dudes and duders!  I am Matt "Splatt" Hutchins, and I get paid money to beat my drum(s) "in public" for the greatest 80's Tribute Band in the world!  My first attempt at learning an instrument was guitar.  The sound that came out made my neighbors' cats never want to have sex again!  So because I wanted to control the regional pet population, I learned drums!  Music does not run too far in my family, that's why I'm a drummer.  I am like the drummer for Donnie Iris - nobody knows who I am!  I like it like that because I never get intimidated, never get asked my name, and I still get free beer!  In my down time, I love to play sports, sleep, eat, drive my car, spend time with my wife and kids, occasionally use the bathroom, look at myself in the mirror, brush my teeth, dye my hair, put my pants on, take my pants off, floss, do the dirty deed, and perform on stage.  On a serious note, I am truly thankful for all of you that come to our shows and I can't wait to RAWK with you at Capone's on Saturday!  Love you.  Mean it!

The Breakfast Club is the longest running, most recognized ’80's tribute band in the United States.  Formed in 1993, the group was the first of its kind. The mission was simple: create an entertainment group that embodied the enigmatic, creative, and buoyant spirit of music and live performances of the original MTV generation of the 1980's. That mission remains the band's priority today.

From the beginning, The Breakfast Club refused to be a wig-wearing ‘80’s cover band which cared more about its costumes than its sound.  The hair is real, the '80's clothes are authentic, and the band really plays their instruments and sing live.  The Breakfast Club is the real deal!

This show is brought to you by Ansley Roberts Promotions.  The Breakfast Club will also perform an all ages show at 80's Night of the Covered Bridge Festival in Elizabethton on June 22nd.  Check out photos and video from previous Breakfast Club shows in the Tri-Cities right here on TriCitiesNights.com.
